KaTsZoNe Newsletters > KaTsZoNe - Issue 26 - Love Me, Love My Teddy

1 Feb 2007

I hope everyone has had a great start to 2007!

As February drifts in, I'm wondering, what do we do on those cold, winter nights?  Do you snuggle with someone special, hug a cuddly stuffed animals or, perhaps, wrap yourself with an electric blanket to stay warm?  Oh ... do tell!!!  (Tracy out in BC, you're probably the only one who might say, you don't know what I'm talking about - "cold, winter nights".  Then again, this year has been pretty wacky out west.)

Well, back to those "cold, winter nights".  I'm thinking, what would I do without Teddy?

First of all, let me start with my little obsession with Teddy Geiger, the eighteen-year-old singer/songwriter from Pittsford, New York (who will be on his way to Australia shortly) since he will be performing in Melbourne on February 8th.  I'm sure many of you have heard me go on and on for months now!  That's one Teddy that has taken over my life in the past several months.  In fact, through Teddy Geiger, I've become friends with Audra, Jaimie, Meredith and Michelle.  We all connected on myspace.com.  I met Audra, Jaimie and Meredith at Teddy G.'s concert in Toronto last November.  They share info., helpful advice, photos from Teddy's concerts and we also talk about our dreams and every day life.  I'm happy for Jaimie (from Port Perry) when she wrote a song for a special someone.  I'm so ecstatic for Michelle (from Boston) because her husband won tickets in a radio contest to fly to LA to attend the Grammys!  I love Audra's enthusiasm for Teddy G. and Standard of Living and wish I could attend more of their concerts in New York state, but, for now, live vicariously through her adventures!  And, Meredith (from Pittsford, NY), who is such a sweetie, keeps all the Teddy Geiger fans up to date with current news and pics.  These gals have been amazing and I feel kind of warm inside when I think about them.  Each of them are true Teddy Geiger fans (aka "Tedheads")!  Love them!

My other "teddy obsession" are my teddy bears.  I googled "teddyness" and tried to find how other people have defined the term, "teddyness".  I haven't had much luck, except that "teddyness" is simply, "being teddy".

I tried to come up with my own definition of "teddyness" or "being teddy".  "Being teddy" means being fun, funny, comforting, loyal, cuddly and also inspiring.  You can be comfortable and be yourself with someone with teddy qualities.  Whether you're named Teddy or have "teddy" qualities, who wouldn't want to be around you?  You're fabulous!

And now, I'd like to introduce you to my own Teddy celebrity who is one of my best friends!  I'm not talking about Teddy Geiger.  I could give you the stats on Teddy Geiger, but, I don't really know him personally.  There's another Teddy in my life.  I actually have several teddy bears, but, I'm just going to tell you about my first bear whose name is Teddy.

Here are Teddy's stats:

Full Name:  Teddy O. Bear  (KK was a toddler, so, all bears were named Teddy.  The middle initial "O" is not really a name - no, he's not Irish.  It's actually a descriptor - i.e. Orange, in case other bears came along.)
Nickname:  Bear
Date of Birth:  Unknown.  Born in approx. 1968, so, he's approx. 38 years old ["A bear grows more alive with age. No one with one ounce of sensitivity could ever consign a bear to the dustbin." (Johnnie Hague)]
Birthplace:  Malaysia (His parents may be English but, it's unconfirmed since Teddy B. does not have a Birth Certificate.)
Height:  1'6"
Weight:  1.5 lbs
Eyes:  Large, black & beady
Hair:  short, orange (prob. mohair)
Body:  Fit and hard (even without working out a lot)!  He's a HOT bear!  His head and right leg are falling apart and he needs to be taped up with the stickiest packaging tape that can be found and KK is the Chief Bear Surgeon.
["A bear remains a bear - even when most of him has fallen off or worn away." (Charlotte Gray)]
Marital Status:  Swinging Single (Teddy's current crush is Coco Chris)
Occupation:  Retired actor/director/writer/stunt bear
Favourite clothing:  Hoodie
Favourite food:  Honey
Favourite past time/hobbies:  Sleeping and dream catching ["Bears sleep by day. At night they stay awake to chase away bad dreams." (Jesse O'Neil)]
Favourite song:  "(Let Me Be Your) Teddy Bear" (by Elvis Presley)
Favourite singer:  Teddy Geiger (of course!)
Favourite quote:  "Bears need people. People need bears." (Pam Brown)
Favourite book(s):  Paddington Bear (by Michael Bond); The Tao of Pooh (by Benjamin Hoff)
Favourite movie(s):  Disney's Winnie the Pooh movies
Favourite websites:  The Great Teddy Bear Hug (http://www.teddybears.com/); I Love Teddies (http://www.iloveteddies.com/documents/document_886.php)

Motto:  "Grin and bear it."

Best friend(s):  Rennie.  He is like Teddy's brother.  His other best friend would be KK (Who would ever guess?)

Relationships:  First girlfriend was Patty Pat.  Teddy B. says, "She was really down to earth. She had short, blonde hair and the most delicious blue eyes. She couldn't walk without the huge "D" size batteries.  Ah, but, she looked really cute in a mini skirt."
Second girlfriend was Wendy Walker.   Teddy B. remembers, "Gorgeous girl!  Yeah, she was all beauty and no brain.  KK washed her hair once and then took her head off to check if it was dry inside.  That's when we both discovered that Wendy had no brain!  She wasn't very genuine either - 100% plastic!  Then, she falls apart on me - literally!  No more plastic girls for me!"

Most memorable time with KK:  Teddy remembers, "When KK was around 3 or 4, she gave me a bath in a bathtub (because a boy told her to do it) and my perfectly soft hair became rough and was never the same again.  Don't know why.  I didn't complain - well, I did, on the inside.  At least, I survived!"
["Baths may be lovely for people - adult people that is, but bears are not that keen. When did you last see or hear of a bear taking a bath, willingly?" (Ted Menton)]

About Teddy:  He's cute, cuddly, affectionate, friendly, funny and extremely loyal.  He's a patient listener, comforting, and inspiring.  He brings out the best in people as well as fellow bears.  He's very sensitive and knows just when to give you a hug when you need one, and when to leave you alone if you need some space.  He's an amazing friend!

This is the best quote I could find, by Ted Menton, which sums it up the best about teddy bears:  "An experienced Teddy Bear brings with him a lifetime of knowledge and experience; the wisdom of silence and the stillness in moments of great turmoil. The long-suffering patience that is learned when belonging to a child who is coming of age, and coping with the bewilderment that this period of time can bring, is what he does best. The experienced bear has seen life through the heart and eyes of a child grown to adulthood and perhaps even accompanied that adult all the way to the end of the road."

Whether human and/or stuffed, I hope you all find some great teddy friends!

And now, as I have done in the past several issues of KaTsZoNe, I'd like to tell you about my favourite music picks for the past month.  I have the albums and single for all of the following:

1.  "Dreamgirls" soundtrack
"Dreamgirls" was a Broadway musical back in 1981.  The movie came out in December, 2006.  The story is set in the late 1960's and early 1970's where three girls form a girl group.  The characters  resemble the actual story of The Supremes.  I loved going back in time and seeing part of music history.  This movie has been nominated for the most Oscars this year (total of 8).  I was very impressed with Jennifer Hudson - of course, I had to ask her to be my myspace friend and she accepted.  Yeah!  Jennifer was a contender in the third season of American Idol and all I can say is, that woman's 5 octave range and powerful voice is totally awesome!!!  Jennifer won the Golden Globe Award and the Screen Actors Guild Award for Best Supporting Actress in her role as Effie White in "Dreamgirls" and, along with her co-star, Eddie Murphy, has been nominated for an Oscar in their supporting roles.  I now have the CD of the movie soundtrack in my hot little hands.  The songs are great, but, I must say, if I hadn't seen the movie first, I probably would not have bought the CD.  I don't know if some of you may feel the same way.  I'll also say that, the music from "Dreamgirls" inspired me to write a new song, called "Don't Want To Be Without You" and I've tried to write it in an R&B/Soul/Pop style.  It's getting there.  I thought, perhaps, someone like Jennifer Hudson would sing it.  The movie was fun to watch and I had lots of fun writing a new song!

2.  Daniel Kirkley - "My New Dawn" single
Daniel's latest single, "My New Dawn" is finally available on iTunes!  We're still waiting for the video to come out.  I've mentioned this song before, but, I guess, now that I have downloaded the song, I just had to talk about it again.  I love the song and I had listened to it on myspace about a couple dozen times, at least.  Daniel's next album, "Let Love Win", is scheduled to be released on May 22, 2007 -- I love the title, don't you?  I think those of you who enjoy contemporary Christian pop music will love Daniel's upcoming album and I say this, in anticipation, only because I have his earlier album, "Seasons of Grace", and loved it!  The title of the new album, "Let Love Win", is taken from one of the lines of the song, "Amen", written by Nicole Nordeman, for Daniel's album.

Daniel's record label is Centricity Records.  Centricity has, specifically, Christian artists and I happen to like several of them, including Jaime Jamgochian and Circleslide.  Recently, Centricity emailed me about a Christian band called, "Downhere", and I also like them too!  Centricity is quite active in posting stuff on Facebook.com, so, I get info from all over!  Oh, you'll laugh when you hear this.  Daniel Kirkley belongs to a group on Facebook called, "106.9 - The Bear - Rocks!" - they are an Ottawa radio station.  I couldn't help myself - I had to sign up on the group too, just because it mentions "Bear"!

So, if you like Christian pop music, keep your eyes peeled and your ears open for Daniel Kirkley!  I'm really looking forward to "Let Love Win"!

3.  Josh Groban - "Awake" album
Josh has done so well since he was seventeen years old.  He's turning twenty-six on February 27th.  Once again (for the third time), I'm enjoying Josh's latest album called "Awake".  The first song I heard from the album, which has been playing on the radio, is "You Are Loved (Don't Give Up)".  It is also a single.  Some of you still remember when you first heard of or saw Josh.  Yes, he is very memorable.  He's got an awesome voice!  By the way, Josh will be performing in Toronto, at the ACC, on March 5th.

Speaking of March, it is going to be an interesting and busy month for me.  I've got the PDAC (Prospectors & Developers Assoc. of Canada) investors' conference and also Music Week.  MINING and MUSIC!  Woohoo!!!  I think you'll get my update in April - unless I happen to elope with a singing geologist/miner.

Have a fabulous February everyone.  Mina, happy birthday!

Also, a Happy Valentines Day, my dear friends!  As Josh and I would say, "You are Loved"!  And, may I also say, "Love me, love my Teddy Bear." (Samantha Armstrong)

Love and (bear) hugs,
xo Katherine

*  This episode of KaTsZoNe is dedicated to all bear lovers and, in particular, to Jaimie M., a fellow "Tedhead" -- woohoo!!!  I feel that Jaimie has all those wonderful "teddyness" qualities!  Lots of hugs to ya, Jaim!
