It's March. Yeah! One of my favourite months because of spring, St. Paddy's Day, and lots of green -- I love green!!!
I think the highlight of my February was eating chocolates -- hey, I couldn't resist. A friend gave me chocolates for Valentine's Day (thanks L!) -- oh, they were "delish"! So, I thought I could gain some inspiration and write some songs after that, but, that didn't work out. Instead, I "blogged", "bulletined" and e-mailed to death on myspace, etc. I was trying to get the word out about singers/songwriters, James Carrington and Paolo Nutini - both from the U.K. And, I was trying to find out who else I knew was also going to the Canadian Music Week conference/events in March. So, I've been a busy bee working my way to being a social butterfly - I can be both, right?
I saw James Carrington perform at Revival (on College St.) on February 22nd and I was really impressed! He's talented, charming, and sweet (once I met him) and I was looking forward to getting his CD, which I did get that night -- and autographed, of course. Also, I had a couple pics taken with James. It was his first time performing in Canada on February 22nd, but, I have no doubt that he'll be back, as his music becomes more known. If you like music, don't forget his name! On the same night, a local songwriter/musician, Michael O'Grady, amused the audience with some Celtic music which I loved. After all these years, if you still don't believe I've got Irish blood somewhere, then, I have no idea where you've been, my friend!!!
As we approach the month of March, I'm just going to highlight several upcoming music events that I'm planning to attend.
On Monday, March 5th, I'll be seeing Josh Groban at the ACC! It's going to be my first time seeing him perform, after listening to his music for several years. I downloaded his latest CD, "Awake" just after Christmas and I must say, he continues to impress his fans and I'm sure, gaining new ones, even now. Here's my little story about my Music Fairy. I was waiting to hear from my friend, D, to see whether she could get tickets a few weeks ago. Then, I thought, it wasn't going to happen. Well, she came through! Woohoo!!! D must have worked together with the Music Fairy (or somehow has connections with her), so, off I will go to see Josh! I haven't heard a bad note (lol) about Josh anywhere. Nelly Shin, a singer/songwriter friend, was really excited for me when she read my blog, saying she saw him perform in Vancouver and thought he was amazing. Interestingly, I also met a new girl on myspace who is a HUGE Josh Groban fan and maybe, she was also working together with the Music Fairy! It is quite interesting how everything fell into place.
In the past, I've talked to people about whether a singer sounds the same live as they do on a CD. We all know about the "magic" that can be done in the recording studio. Anyway, an authentic talent is a jewel, especially if they sound as great live as they do on a fabulous album. I was quite impressed with James Carrington's video when he was just playing guitar and singing live, in the open air, at Ibiza (one of the Belearean Islands belonging to Spain). He sounded great and I had to believe that it was not "magically altered". Based on the sample of songs, and in particular, that video taken in Ibiza, I concluded that James Carrington is a true talent, and sure enough, I heard his same genuine sound, in Toronto, live.
I was hoping to see Paolo Nutini perform at the Mod Club on March 7th, and I can just kick myself for not getting tickets earlier because by the time I tried, it was sold out! He's the latest "craze" coming to N. America from Scotland. He's 20-years-old and currently on tour of the U.S. and Canada with many sold-out venues or switching to larger venues due to his popularity. When you're on Rolling Stone's top 10 musicians to watch for (in 2006), then, you're surely going to be noticed - so, Paolo is quite a hit now, with more and more people knowing his name. If you've walk into HMV in the past month or so (like I have), you may already be hearing his songs being played. His debut CD, "These Streets", was released in N. America on January 31, 2007. I've seen Paolo in several videos and he is definitely quite a performer. Oh, be still my beating heart. Where was he when I was 20? My favourite songs are "New Shoes" (makes you want to get up and dance) and "Jenny, Don't Be Hasty". My myspace friend from Boston (Michelle) and I have been "wowed" by Paolo. We love his music and we both wanted to see him in concert. It doesn't look like it's in the cards for both Michelle and me. My last effort was to try and enter a contest on myspace, but, I didn't get picked. I'm hoping my Music Fairy is saving up some surprises for me, but, if it doesn't happen, I think Paolo is also another musician who will come back to Canada. So, next time, I won't miss the opportunity!
I've signed up for a three-day conference as part of Canadian Music Week (CMW), and that takes place March 8th, 9th and 10th. My friend, Daphne Darling (a singer/songwriter) will also be there, so, we plan to meet up at that time. Daphne is going to be performing at Free Times Cafe on College Street, starting at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, March 9th. During CMW, there will be songwriters rounds (where various singers/songwriters take turns doing a few songs and just go "around") on Fri. Mar. 9th and Sat. Mar. 10th, starting at 9 p.m. at various venues in the GTA. I don't have all the locations, but, I know that Free Times Cafe is one of them on the Friday night (after Daphne's performance with other singers). It's open to the public and costs $10.
I can't believe that all my music-related events are happening NEXT WEEK!!!
The week after that, it's ST. PATRICK'S DAY! YEAH!!! I already have dinner plans with friends on the Friday before St. Paddy's Day. I know...you want me to show you pics of me in a silly green hat, a green beer in my hand, doing Irish jigs on a table top -- sorry, you'll have to see me LIVE .... SOME DAY. You know, I'm just too shy to do stuff like that. But, just in case, if I'm ever out with any of you, I'd have to do a spot check to make sure that you don't have a camera, camera phone or camcorder in your possession - don't let me find anything or you'll be sorry! Then again, I could end up being a "star" on youtube. Oh, don't let me go there. I'm really tempted to tell you about a 'discovered' singer on youtube - but, I'll save it for next time. Briefly, her name is Esmee Denters, who's 18-years-old, and lives in The Netherlands. I'm going to stop until I have more information or contact with her.
Finally, I guess you're wondering, why did I call this episode of KaTsZoNe, "Music and Lyrics". I just saw the movie, "Music and Lyrics", starring Hugh Grant and Drew Barrymore, yesterday. It's a nice, romantic comedy with catchy songs and will help you reminisce about '80's music and bands. And, it's a reminder for me about March which is turning out to be quite a musical month, and, of course, I'd like to write more music and lyrics!
I'll let you all know if I encounter more musicians/celebrities -- as though it happens to me all the time -- strangely, never, until recent months. I guess, you never know what can happen unless you dare to dream. Having a Music Fairy on my side probably helps too.
I've updated my website at http://www.myspace.com/katszone so, come check it out some time!
Hope you all have a wonderful March! If you have a chance to take a break, have fun! I look forward to hearing about your adventures this coming month.
Love you all!
